PYRGOS : Pyrgos is an inland village located on the top of a hill and until the 18th century it was the island's capital. A Venetian castle dominates the town and traditional houses are built around it. Even though it is one of the most picturesque parts of the island, it has recently become famous and worthvisiting for many reasons; First, from the top of the hill the view is breathtaking for it overlooks the whole island. Second, the town has a number of old churches like the church of Theotoki, which dates from the 10th century,Agia Triada, the churches of Agia Theodosia, Agios Nikolaos, Eisodia tis Theotokou (Presentation of the Virgin Mary) and the Archangel Michael.
The most famous church of the island lies in the area, the Monastery of Prophitis Ilias where a collection of ethnographic objects and old icons are artefacts. Third, it has become known due to the impressive Easter celebrations done every year, like the procession of the Epitafios on Good Friday when the village is decorated with lanterns and the whole place brightens like gold at night. For these reasons and many more, don't miss visiting this place and its history. It is worth it!
