Epirus

Epirus is the most mountainous part of Greece; three quarters of it consists of high peaks and sharp hills.
It has lost many of its inhabitants to the search for a better luck. Emigration has left its spot on Epirus. The pain of this separation inspired the most of the Greek popular songs. The most of great benefactors who did a lot of to support the Modern Greek state were from this proud land!
When the emigrants returned to their homeland, they wanted to keep the unique beauty of their land so they used traditional building crafts to erect their homes. That has as result; today we have in the villages of Zagoria the most important chain of mountain built-up-areas in the country.
Also, Epirus is famous for its marvellous stone bridges. The bridge of Arta is one of them that its architecture is unique.
. The lake Pamvotis at Ioannina is among the most beautiful lakes of Greece. Another beautiful lake, which is called Drakolimni there is also on Mt. Gamila.
The rivers of Epirus are in the list of the best in Europe for trout fishing and water- rafting.
Anyone, who visits the ancient oracle of Zeus at Dodoni, feels the magic whispers of the oak tree as prophecies for his destiny.
In lake Pamvotis, there is a little island that is famous for its monasteries with their   unique icons. The Greek artists had combined the ancient with the Christian spirit to create these marvellous orthodox icons.
